The Fort Wayne Philharmonic has a long tradition of bringing live concert experience directly to schools throughout Northeast Indiana. Nine Fort Wayne Philharmonic chamber ensembles offer in-school educational programs that include musical performances, instrument demonstration and opportunities for student interaction. Each ensemble program is designed to address the Indiana Department of Education Standards of Learning in Music and may be crafted to support multidisciplinary themes.
The Fort Wayne Philharmonic has seven chamber ensembles available to perform in elementary schools. Ensembles represent each of different instrument group of the orchestra, including: strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. Ensemble performances are typically booked for the entire school, with the musicians playing two, back-to-back, 35-minute performances, assembly-style.
The Fort Wayne Philharmonic also offers two ensembles specifically for pre-school classrooms. Woodwind and string duos are available to perform programs specifically designed for the young learner. These 25-minute performances can be booked for individual classrooms and/or an entire building, depending on the number of students.
For more information about Philharmonic ensemble programs, please contact Anne Lewellen, Ensemble Coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org
Club Orchestra is modelled after Venezuela's "El Sistema" movement and was created to develop future generations of arts-aware and musically knowledgeable citizens. Led by the Philharmonic’s principal violist Derek Reeves, Club Orchestra increases self-esteem and teaches life lessons to students through music in an orchestra classroom.
Instrument Loan Program
Every student should have the opportunity to play an instrument of their choosing. Over 100 string, brass, and woodwind instruments are available on a first-come first-served basis for musicians at any ability level. For more information, contact Shelby McFann at email@example.com or 260.637.1506.
The Fort Wayne Philharmonic Youth Orchestras program provides student musicians with an authentic, professional orchestra experience. A core focus of the program is to provide exceptional artistic training and trans-formative experiences that leave students with a strong sense of discipline, accomplishment, confidence, self-esteem, a network of camaraderie and deep appreciation for music and the arts.
The program is an enhancement to, not a substitute for, existing school music programs. The Philharmonic encourages students to enroll as a member of their school orchestra and/or band program, if one exists and it fits within the student's academic plan.
With a four-concert season, youth orchestra students study and perform a wide range of orchestral repertoire, from classics and pops to chamber music. Student musicians receive unique, professional opportunities such as:
- Coaching with Philharmonic musicians
- Side-by-side performances with the Philharmonic
- Participation in and performances with small chamber ensembles
- Access to special events, including master classes and guest artist visits
- Complimentary tickets to select Philharmonic concerts
- Scholarship opportunities for private lessons and summer music camps, among others
The Fort Wayne Philharmonic Youth Orchestras program is open to all student musicians in the greater Fort Wayne area who have not yet graduated high school. The Youth Orchestra Program features two ensembles.
