Philharmonic Files Regressive Bargaining Charges Against Musicians Union

Fort Wayne, IN (January 4, 2023) — After attempts to reach a mutually beneficial contract, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and Local 58, Fort Wayne Philharmonic Players’ Association have been unable to come to an agreement following today’s negotiation session.

The recent proposals submitted by the Players’ Association and Local 58, even with the assistance from the Federal Mediator, have moved backwards. The union has continued to present proposals that move away from a fair deal and have stalled in progress since December 12. While both parties continue to make time for negotiations, there have been four unproductive sessions in which the union has shown unwillingness to negotiate in good faith. The lack of progress towards a fair contract made over the last four negotiation sessions has prompted the Philharmonic to file charges of regressive bargaining against the union with the National Labor Relations Board.

Prior to ending the negotiation session today, in hopes of reaching a resolution and bargaining against themselves, the Philharmonic proposed additional wage increases totaling 42% over 4 years, exceeding pre-pandemic wages in year one of the proposed contract.

The Philharmonic remains hopeful to welcome back our Musicians when they are ready to return to the stage.

The Philharmonic and Players’ Association have agreed to return to the negotiation table on Thursday January 5.
