He began playing at age 13. In addition to his position with The Phil, he is a trumpet instructor at Goshen College. Murotani received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education at Luther College and a Master of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts at the State University of New York-Stony Brook. He played at the Spoleto Festival in Italy for two summers and was an extra with the Grand Rapids and South Bend Symphonies. He and his wife, Alex, Phil violinist, have a daughter, Ellie. Murotani lists home repairs and jazz among his other interests.
