Who We Are

Our Mission

The Fort Wayne Philharmonic is dedicated to fostering and instilling a lifelong love of music across the orchestral spectrum through live performances and educational experiences. As one of Indiana’s premier performing arts organizations, we strive for excellence in performance, education, and community engagement, enriching lives by presenting world-class music that unites and uplifts our diverse community.

Our History

Early Beginnings:
1920s – 1944

Before the Philharmonic’s official formation, Fort Wayne had a rich history of symphonic music. Early orchestral performances were presented by community musicians, schools, and traveling ensembles.

In 1924, the Fort Wayne Symphony Orchestra was founded and conducted by Abram Chasins. Though short-lived, this effort reflected the city’s growing enthusiasm for orchestral music.

Founding the Philharmonic: 1944

The Fort Wayne Philharmonic was officially established in 1944, guided by a visionary group of musicians, business leaders, and patrons. The orchestra was founded with the belief that symphonic music should be accessible to all.

The First Music Director: 1944 – 1980

Igor Buketoff, the Philharmonic’s first music director, set the foundation for the orchestra’s artistic excellence. Under his leadership, the Philharmonic grew rapidly, attracting talented musicians and expanding its programming.

During these formative years, the Philharmonic introduced:

  • Seasonal subscription concerts
  • Youth and education concerts
  • Special community outreach initiatives

Growth and Expansion: 1980 – 2000

During the late 20th century, the Philharmonic continued to thrive under various music directors who expanded its repertoire, enhanced community engagement, and modernized performances. Key milestones included:

  • The introduction of Pops concerts
  • The creation of new educational programs for schools
  • Partnerships with ballet and opera companies

The 21st Century: Innovation and Excellence

Entering the 2000s, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic embraced new artistic directions, reaching broader audiences and incorporating modern compositions alongside classical masterworks. Highlights of this era include:

  • Expanded digital outreach and live-streamed concerts
  • Greater emphasis on diversity and inclusion in programming
  • New collaborations with contemporary composers and artists

Community Engagement
and Education

Beyond the concert hall, the Philharmonic is deeply committed to music education and outreach. Our programs include:

  • Young People’s Concerts: Introducing students to live orchestral music
  • Community Concerts: Free performances in neighborhoods and public spaces
  • Masterclasses & Workshops: Providing aspiring musicians with mentorship opportunities

Looking Ahead

As we move forward, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic remains committed to artistic excellence, innovation, and community engagement. We look forward to expanding our impact and continuing to inspire future generations through the power of music.
