FAQs for New and Returning Patrons

Plan Your Visit

First time at the Phil? Not sure what to wear, when to clap, or what to expect? We've got you. This quick guide will help you feel right at home in the concert hall — whether you're a lifelong music lover or brand new to the orchestra experience.

Before the music begins…
You'll see musicians warming up on stage — tuning instruments and getting ready. It might sound a bit chaotic, but that's totally normal.

Then, the magic starts.
The lights dim, the concertmaster comes out (applause!), and after a final tuning note, the conductor takes the stage (more applause!). Let yourself settle into the experience — there's nothing quite like live music.

Please keep conversation and devices to a minimum once the music begins.

Phones off, please.
Even a small notification can pull attention away from the performance — not to mention those around you. Snap a selfie before or after, but kindly no photos or video during the show.

It's common to applaud:

  • When the concertmaster enters
  • When the conductor and/or soloist enters
  • At the end of a full piece (not between movements)

Not sure? Follow the conductor's body language or the rest of the audience.

There's no dress code — truly!

Some patrons enjoy dressing up, others keep it comfy. Think business casual, date-night chic, or even jeans and a nice top. Just avoid noisy accessories or overwhelming scents.

Tip: Bring a sweater — concert halls can run cool.

15–30 minutes before showtime is ideal. That gives you time to:

  • Park
  • Grab a program
  • Visit concessions or restrooms
  • Settle into your seat without rushing

Most concerts include a 15–20 minute intermission halfway through. It's your chance to stretch, use the restroom, or chat about what you've heard so far.

Every concert features a digital Prelude Program Book with info on:

  • The composers
  • The music you'll hear
  • Guest artists performing

You can find the Prelude linked on the concert event page, and hard copies will be for sale in the lobby.

Bonus! Masterworks concerts include Musically Speaking, a short pre-concert talk that dives deeper into the music.

Because it's more than just music — it's an experience.

It's community, emotion, beauty, and energy you can feel in the room. Whether it's your first concert or your 50th, every performance is a new journey.

  • Got a cough? Take quiet, unwrapped cough drops (we offer some in the lobby!)
  • Adjust hearing aids to avoid feedback
  • Hold off on strong perfume — some patrons/musicians have sensitivities
  • Try to stay seated until the end of a piece unless absolutely necessary
